How to Make Watermelon Balls
Take watermelon from a messy slice to an elegant dessert by making watermelon balls. The balls work as well for a picnic or barbecue for kids as they do for a light dessert after a sit-down dinner. Serve large platters of watermelon balls with toothpicks so guests can spear them easily from a buffet. Or, hollow out half a watermelon and use it as a serving bowl for a whimsical presentation. Because melon ballers have no sharp edges, you can set the kids to work preparing this classic summertime treat.
Things You'll Need
- Knife
- Melon baller
- Bowl
Instructions
-
Cut the watermelon in half lengthwise with a sharp knife. Cut each half in half again if you don't plan to use the rind for serving the watermelon balls.
-
Insert a melon baller into the center of one watermelon half or quarter. Twist the scoop around completely, cutting out a perfect ball.
-
Lift the scoop holding the watermelon ball out of the melon. Place the ball in the bowl.
-
Scoop out the remaining melon with the melon baller, working outward from the center. The balls from near the rind may not come out as complete spheres.
-
Remove any fruit scraps from inside the rind halves with a sharp knife if you are using the rind as a serving bowl. Scrape out the remaining fruit so the entire white portion of the rind is revealed. Transfer the watermelon balls from the bowl to the rind.
