How to Bake Lentils

Baked lentils take about an hour to make, but the prep work is fast and simple. Everything else in the process is passive cooking time, during which you can tend to other things. These legumes make for a delicious and nutritious side dish or you can combine them with other ingredients to turn out a casserole or other heartier dish to serve as an entree. As an added bonus, lentils are relatively cheap and supply a lot of essential nutrients.

Things You'll Need

  • Strainer
  • Measuring cups
  • Casserole dish
  • Salt and pepper
  • Herbs, spices, aromatics (optional)
  • Fork

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

  2. Pour the lentils into a strainer. Pick through them to remove any foreign matter. Rinse them under cold running water, turning them over repeatedly with your free hand to ensure a thorough washing.

  3. Pour three-quarters of a cup of water per cup of lentils into a casserole dish. Add the lentils, along with salt and pepper to taste and any other desired complementary herbs, spices, aromatics and accompanying ingredients. Some possibilities include curry powder or paste, turmeric, coriander, rosemary, ginger, garlic, onion, scallions, tomates, carrots, split peas, pitted dates, bacon, soy sauce or tamari.

  4. Cover the casserole dish and put it into the oven. Bake the lentils for approximately 50 to 60 minutes. Stir everything well halfway through. If you like, top the lentils with shredded cheddar or another cheese for about the last 5 minutes of baking time. Fluff the lentils with a fork before serving.
