How to Cook Fresh Broccoli in a Slow Cooker (5 Steps)
If you’re a broccoli lover, then you probably know a few clever ways to build upon the flavor of this side dish. You can top it with bacon pieces or drizzle it with cheese for fussy eaters. But if you’ve never had broccoli cooked in a slow cooker, you’re missing out on a way to turn this vegetable into a pleasingly soft and tender treat. If you're worried about the broccoli turning too soft, there's a compelling and simple way to restore the crunch factor.
Things You'll Need
- Paper towel
- Knife
- Olive oil
- Minced garlic (optional)
- Salt and pepper
- Red pepper flakes (optional)
- Small saucepan
- Butter
- Breadcrumbs
- Lemon juice
Instructions
-
Wash the broccoli under cool water and let it dry on a paper towel. Remove any of the broccoli leaves and separate the florets from the stems. Cut them both into about 1-inch chunks with a sharp knife.
-
Pour about 1/3 cup of olive oil into your slow cooker for about 1 ½ pounds of broccoli. Add some minced garlic, if you like, and season the vegetable with a little salt and pepper. If you crave heat in your dishes, add some red pepper flakes, too.
-
Cook the broccoli in our slower cooker for about 6 hours on the low setting or for 3 hours on the high setting. Carefully open the lid periodically and stir the broccoli.
-
Add crunch to your broccoli by bringing some butter to a boil in a small saucepan. Reduce the heat and then add breadcrumbs or a seasoned stuffing mixture to the pan. Stir in some lemon juice and pepper.
-
Pour the crunchy mixture over the broccoli during the last 30 minutes of cooking time. Stir and serve.
