How do you change pool pH with baking soda?
Step 1: Calculate the amount of baking soda needed:
1. Determine the current pH level of your pool water using a pH test kit.
2. Aim for a pH level between 7.2 and 7.8.
3. Use the following formula to calculate the amount of baking soda needed:
Amount of baking soda (in pounds) = (Desired pH - Current pH) x Alkalinity x Volume of pool water in gallons / 10,000.
Note: Alkalinity is a measure of the water's ability to resist pH change. It is usually expressed in parts per million (ppm) and can be found using a pool test kit.
Step 2: Add the baking soda to your pool:
1. Turn off the pool pump.
2. Sprinkle the baking soda evenly across the pool surface, ensuring distribution throughout the water.
3. Avoid clumping by broadcasting the baking soda in small handfuls.
4. Wait 1 hour before turning the pump back on. This allows the baking soda to dissolve completely.
Step 3: Monitor the pH level and adjust as needed:
1. Wait at least 24 hours after adding the baking soda before testing the pH level again.
2. If the pH level is still below the desired range, repeat the process, adding only half the previously calculated amount of baking soda.
3. Be patient, as it may take several days for the pH level to stabilize.
Remember: Adding too much baking soda can raise the pH level too high, so it is better to add small amounts and gradually adjust the pH level until it reaches the desired range.
