Why Can't Metal Sealing Lids for Canning Be Used More Than Once?
It may seem like a cost-saving measure to reuse canning lids, but think again. Canning lids are designed for one use only and using them a second time may put you at risk for foodborne illness. Keep your canned goods safe and have peace of mind that your seals will remain throughout storage by always using new canning lids.
Canning Lid Basics
-
Canning lids are lined with a sealing adhesive that creates an airtight seal on canning jars once heated. Once this adhesive has been heated one time, it no longer is safe for reuse because of high chance of seal failure. Just because you are able to remove a lid without damaging its seal and it looks fine, this does not mean it is safe to reuse. Throw out used lids or use them for storing other types of foods or in craft projects.
Canning Ring Reuse
-
Just because you can't use the lids, doesn't mean you cannot reuse the rings. Because the rings do not seal to the jar, they are safe to use again. Inspect rings before using them to ensure they are rust-free; discard any rings that have rust in the inner threads that come in contact with the jar. Once your jars are sealed and cooled, remove the rings before storage to prevent them from rusting while stored in your pantry. Wash and store the rings separately so you can reuse the rings several times.
Buying Canning Lids
-
The cost of canning supplies can make the initial cost to begin canning seem high. But once you've bought the jars and the other supplies, the only ongoing expense is the lids. Buy lids at home goods stores, grocery stores or look online for the largest selection. Look for sales on lids and other canning supplies both before and after the canning season for the best deals. Buy all your lids for the season at once to take advantage of special deals.
Other Uses for Canning Lids
-
Instead of throwing used canning lids away, save them for other uses. Use an awl to punch holes in one and secure it to a jar with flour in it for use while baking. Store dry goods in jars and put your used tops to use to close the jars. Use them to top jars to store leftovers in your refrigerator for an easy alternative to plastic storage containers. You can also use them for craft projects.
