How to Season a New Cast Iron Kettle

Iron cookware is a popular cooking medium. It heats evenly, transfers heat well, and can be used for almost any culinary application. However, iron rusts easily and quickly. Seasoning is the process of applying a thin layer of carbon to iron cookware to prevent rust from forming.

Things You'll Need

  • Soap
  • Shortening or canola, vegetable, or peanut oil
  • Oven

Instructions

  1. Wash kettle thoroughly with hot, soapy water and allow to dry completely.

  2. Apply a very thin, very even layer of shortening or cooking oil all over the top, bottom, inside and outside of the kettle.

  3. If your kettle has a spout, use a paper towel to apply a thin layer of oil on the inside of the spout.

  4. Place the kettle in the oven upside down and turn the oven on to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (roughly one hundred and seventy-five degrees Celsius).

  5. Allow the kettle to "cook" for one hour, then turn off the oven and allow the kettle to cool before handling.
