How to Season a New Cast Iron Kettle
Iron cookware is a popular cooking medium. It heats evenly, transfers heat well, and can be used for almost any culinary application. However, iron rusts easily and quickly. Seasoning is the process of applying a thin layer of carbon to iron cookware to prevent rust from forming.
Things You'll Need
- Soap
- Shortening or canola, vegetable, or peanut oil
- Oven
Instructions
-
Wash kettle thoroughly with hot, soapy water and allow to dry completely.
-
Apply a very thin, very even layer of shortening or cooking oil all over the top, bottom, inside and outside of the kettle.
-
If your kettle has a spout, use a paper towel to apply a thin layer of oil on the inside of the spout.
-
Place the kettle in the oven upside down and turn the oven on to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (roughly one hundred and seventy-five degrees Celsius).
-
Allow the kettle to "cook" for one hour, then turn off the oven and allow the kettle to cool before handling.
