Repairing a Rival Roaster Lid With Enamel Paint
No matter which model of Rival roaster you own, it's a convenient and efficient way to roast turkeys, cook side dishes or even bake a cake. Rival roaster ovens typically feature enamel-on-steel cooking surfaces and lids. Once chipped, not only is the blemish an eyesore, it may rust and cause food to stick. Repairing the enamel surface properly requires an enamel repair kit -- a food-grade kit if the chip is inside the roaster. You can't simply use enamel paint. Enamel -- technically "vitreous enamel" -- isn't paint. It's made by fusing powdered glass to metal under temperatures over 1,000 degrees F.
Things You'll Need
- 400- to 600- grit wet/dry sandpaper
- Sponge or soft dishcloth
- Soft, dry cloth
Instructions
-
Dampen a piece of 400- to 600- grit wet/dry sandpaper or use the sandpaper or steel wool enclosed in the enamel repair kit. Skip wetting the sandpaper only if the manufacturer's instructions specify not to. Gently sand the chipped area, extending slightly to across the edges, to blunt sharp edges, roughen the surface to ensure a good bond, and remove any loose flakes.
-
Wash your Rival roaster lid in a sink of hot, soapy water. Use a nylon scrub pad to remove stubborn residue and follow with a sponge or soft dishcloth. Dry the lid thoroughly and allow it to set a few hours to ensure no moisture remains.
-
Mix the hardener with the filler according to the enamel repair kit's instructions, which may vary somewhat from manufacturer to manufacturer. Use the enclosed tool -- if any -- to spread the compound across the chipped area, blending the edges with the existing enamel. Aim for a layer slightly thicker than the current finish and smooth thoroughly.
-
Sand the surface again once the enamel repair compound is sufficiently dry. Check the product instructions for the exact time. Smooth and level the patch. Wipe away sanding dust before proceeding.
-
Apply the paint finish enclosed in the enamel repair kit. Choose a color that matches your Rival Roaster lid for best results. Brush, dab or otherwise spread the paint as directed by the product manufacturer. Wait for the paint to dry as specified before washing the lid and putting it away with your Rival roaster base.
