How to Make a Heart Shape Cookie Cutter (13 Steps)

If you love baking cookies, you'll love it even more if you make your own cookie cutter. And a heart-shaped cookie cutter, with its simple contours and only two sharp bends, is one of the easiest to construct. You can make your cookie cutter any size---that's the fun of doing it yourself. Imagine your sweetie's smile if you present him or her with a giant heart-shaped Valentine cookie decorated with your own flair. But heart-shaped cookies will brighten up any holiday. Follow these easy steps to bring smiles and "heart-y" treats to your friends and family.

Things You'll Need

  • Aluminum or copper ribbon, 1-inch wide
  • Drawing of the heart shape
  • String or twine
  • Scissors or tin snips
  • A jar or other round object that matches the size of your heart's curve
  • A ruler or tape measure
  • Marking pen
  • Straight edge
  • Needle-nose pliers (optional)
  • A metal file (optional)
  • 1/2-inch double-sided tape and/or heavy duty stapler

Instructions

  1. Lay the string along the line contours of your heart drawing. This determines the length of metal ribbon you'll need to cut.

  2. Cut the string to the length that equals the perimeter of the heart, plus 1 inch.

  3. Cut a strip of the metal ribbon with the scissors or tin strips the same length as the string from Step 2.

  4. Measure 1 inch in from one end of the metal strip and make a mark at that point with the marking pen.

  5. Bend the metal strip over the straight edge at the 1-inch mark to create a 90-degree bend. You can use needle-nose pliers to hold and bend the metal.

  6. Measure to the halfway point between the first bend and the other end of the metal strip, and make a small mark at that point with the marking pen.

  7. Bend the metal strip over the straight edge at that midway point to create a sharp "V" bend. This creates the upper point of your heart.

  8. At the "V" bend created in Step 5, bend the strip around the jar or other round surface. Repeat for the metal strip on the other side of the "V" bend. These are the two lobes of the heart.

  9. Attach a 1-inch-long piece of double-sided tape to the inside face of the 1-inch-long bent end of the strip.

  10. Adhere the other end of the metal strip to the taped end, forming the final shape of the heart.

  11. For extra strength, staple over the taped ends.

  12. If there are sharp edges or burrs, smooth them with the file.

  13. Wash the cookie cutter before use.
