What Can I Use to Cut Square Patties for Sliders?

Sliders, or mini hamburgers, were invented in 1916 in Kansas. The difficulty of making several 2- to 3-inch hamburgers, rather than a single, larger burger, may have deterred you from making them. The smart use of some standard kitchen tools can make the process easier. Start by rolling out the ground beef between two sheets of parchment paper before cutting square patties.

Chef's Knife

  • The sharpest knife in your drawer is probably your largest and heaviest chef's knife. The weight and sharpness of this knife will help you cut through the connective tissue and fat of the ground beef. It is not the easiest tool to use for cutting sliders, because a chef's knife will not make a single, continuous cut through the ground beef.

Pizza Cutter

  • A sharp pizza cutter will make long, continuous cuts through the ground beef, allowing you to cut square patties in a grid system. Cut the several slices vertically, then repeat the process horizontally.

Kitchen Shears

  • Kitchen shears can also be used to cut even slices through ground beef. Leave the ground beef layered between two pieces of parchment paper after you roll it out. Cut through both the parchment and the ground beef with the kitchen shears. It is easiest to cut long strips vertically, then cut the strips into square patties.

Cookie Cutters

  • If you want perfectly square patties that are all exactly the same size, a cookie cutter will help you achieve your goal. Place a 2- or 3-inch square cookie cutter on the rolled-out ground beef and press down firmly. Use a sharp paring knife to cut around the edges of the cookie cutter before removing the patty. If you don't mind round patties, a biscuit cutter also works.
