How to Clean a Dutch Oven (6 Steps)

A cast iron Dutch oven is wonderful for cooking a variety of items while camping. Proper cleaning and care will make your Dutch oven last longer and work better, so be sure to clean yours immediately after using it.

Things You'll Need

  • Scraper
  • Sponge or scrub brush
  • Vinegar
  • Hot water
  • Shortening
  • Paper towels

Instructions

  1. Scrape all food out of the Dutch oven with a plastic scraper. If you don't have one on hand, a soft plastic pancake turner will work.

  2. Rinse the Dutch oven out with warm water.

  3. Scrub the interior of the Dutch oven using a vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 3 parts water) and a sponge or a clean scrub brush. Make sure you remove all evidence of food from the oven.

  4. Warm the Dutch oven by the fire or coals.

  5. Apply a thin layer of shortening to all surfaces of the Dutch oven, including the lid. Allow it to cool.

  6. Place a paper towel between the Dutch oven and the lid. It is now ready to be used for the next meal or to be stored away.
