How to Debone a Turkey (6 Steps)

While many people focus on deboning a turkey before cooking it, deboning after cooking is much easier. The steps below will tell you how to debone a turkey after you cook it and how to make homemade turkey soup.

Things You'll Need

  • Cooked turkey
  • Large pot
  • Vegetables for soup
  • Noodles or/and rice
  • Slotted spoon

Instructions

  1. Cook the turkey. Stuff and prepare it however you choose. Serve the dinner and save whatever you have left to make soup.

  2. Put the turkey in a pot of water. Make sure you cover the whole turkey with water. This may require cutting or breaking the turkey apart before putting it in the pot.

  3. Boil the water with the turkey in it for at least an hour. The longer you boil it the easier it will be to debone it.

  4. Let the water cool. Keep the water at a temperature that will allow you to work with the turkey. A lot of the meat will already have fallen off the bones.

  5. Using a slotted spoon, start pulling out the turkey bones from the broth. Take the meat off the bones in stages. Toss the bones in the garbage as you clear them. Continue until you have removed all the bones and you have successfully deboned your turkey.

  6. Add any ingredients you would like to have in your soup, such as carrots, celery, onions, salt and pepper. Boil the water again and add noodles or rice and you will have delicious turkey noodle or turkey rice soup. Alternatively, you can cook the noodles and rice separately, and add them to portions of the soup so your family can choose either turkey noodle soup or turkey rice soup.
