How to Stop Splatter When Frying Bacon
Splattering bacon not only leaves a mess on your stove, counters and other nearby surfaces, it also poses a safety hazard. Too much heat, too much grease and moisture from the bacon slices can all cause sputters and spurts in the frying pan. But no matter the reason, you can use a few simple tricks to prevent the splatter.
Splatter Prevention
-
To prevent splatter, blot the bacon with a paper towel before you put it in the pan. This removes any excess moisture that could "pop" when mixed with hot grease. Start bacon in a cold pan and cook it over low heat. This method releases the fat over time instead of with one big sizzle when the bacon hits the pan. Additionally, use a splatter screen, a mesh cover for a skillet.
Baking the Bacon
-
Consider doing away with the frying pan and cooking your bacon in the oven. To do this, line a baking sheet with foil and arrange the uncooked bacon in a single layer on top of it. Place the pan in the oven and bake the bacon for approximately 12 to 15 minutes at 400 degrees. When the bacon looks crisp, take it out of the oven and lay it on a paper towel to collect excess grease.
