How to Steam Vegetables for Baby Food (5 Steps)
Steaming vegetables for baby food helps preserve the vitamins and minerals in the foods. Steaming vegetables for your baby's food means you know exactly what went into the food and how it was made. It may also save you money over jarred foods. After you've steamed the foods, blend or chop them, depending on how old your baby is.
Things You'll Need
- Pot with lid
- Steaming basket
- Fork
- Food processor
Instructions
-
Fill a pot part of the way with water and put it on the stove to heat. The water should come below the steamer basket. Cover the pot with a lid that fits well.
-
Wash thoroughly and chop or dice the vegetable to be steamed into 1-inch or smaller pieces.
-
Place the vegetables in the steamer and lower the steamer basket over the water once the water is boiling. Cover the steamer with a lid and lower the heat to medium to keep the water boiling.
-
Steam the vegetables for 5 minutes and then check them by piercing them with a fork. They should pierce easily. If they do, remove a piece from the pot and crush it with the back of a fork to see if it will easily puree without lumps. If it does not, steam for another 5 minutes and test again.
-
Remove the steamer basket when the vegetables are cooked and drain thoroughly. Puree the vegetables in a food processor for a young baby or mash them lightly with a fork for an older baby.
