How to Cook Taiwan Red Cargo Rice

Taiwan red cargo rice is similar to brown rice except instead of the brown or tan color, the color may be maroon or red. Processing Taiwan red cargo rice is similar to processing brown rice, with the outer husks being the only portion of the rice kernels removed. This means that all of the dense nutrients and vitamins inside the bran layer of the rice are intact in the rice kernels. When you cook Taiwan red cargo rice, the process is similar to cooking brown rice.

Things You'll Need

  • Taiwan red cargo rice
  • Water
  • 2-quart saucepan
  • Stove top
  • Salt
  • Measuring cup

Instructions

  1. Measure one part Taiwan red cargo rice and two parts cool water and pour the ingredients into the saucepan (1 cup of Taiwan red cargo rice makes 2 to 3 cups of cooked rice).

  2. Allow the Taiwan red cargo rice to soak in the water for at least eight hours.

  3. Drain the rice after the eight hours elapses and add two parts of cool water again to the rice in the saucepan. Some cooks add a small amount of extra water to the rice for the cooking process (approximately 1/8-cup for each cup of rice).

  4. Bring the rice and water to a boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer after it boils and cover the rice.

  5. Cook the rice for approximately 45 minutes. Remove it from the heat after the cooking time and allow it to sit while covered for ten minutes.

  6. Serve immediately after the standing time, seasoning it with salt and pepper.
