How to Grill & Brown in Microwave Ovens
Microwaves that have a built-in grill allow you to grill food in a shorter amount of time than if you were to use a conventional grill. They also are useful if you want to brown food that already has been cooked in the oven.
Things You'll Need
- Microwave with grill setting
Using the grill
-
Place food on the grill plate. You can grill burgers, steaks, sausages, bacon, vegetables, toast and fish in the microwave.
-
Set the microwave to grill mode. Choose between the low, medium or high setting depending on how brown you want the food to be.
-
Check to see whether food is sufficiently cooked when it finishes grilling. As with regular microwaving, you don’t need to keep checking throughout. However, if you’re unsure how long the food you’re preparing needs to cook, it’s best to err on the side of caution to avoid burning and use a lower setting to start. You always can put it back in for longer. If you’re grilling sausages or other meats, these will require more time than cheese on toast, for instance.
-
Leave food to rest for a few minutes before serving. This is because microwave cooking causes fat, sugar and water molecules in food to move a lot faster than with conventional cooking, meaning it will continue to cook for a few minutes after heat is removed.
Browning
-
Cook food as normal in the oven.
-
Place the cooked food on the grill plate.
-
Set the microwave to grill mode. Choose between the low, medium or high setting depending on how brown you want the food to be.
-
Remove food from the microwave when it is properly cooked, and leave to rest for a few minutes before dishing.
