How to Make Red Sugar
While most grocery stores sell colored decorating sugar, it can be expensive. Making your own with granulated sugar and red food dye takes just seconds and you can make enough to decorate as many cakes, cupcakes, cookies or candies as you need. This can come in handy for the winter holidays or Valentine's Day when you may need a lot of red. Store colored sugar with your other baking supplies to use whenever you want.
Things You'll Need
- Plastic food storage bag
- Granulated white sugar
- Red food coloring
- Plastic gloves
Instructions
-
Measure 1/2 cup of granulated white sugar into a plastic food storage bag. Add 2 to 3 drops of red food coloring to the bag.
-
Seal the bag and shake to distribute the food coloring evenly over the sugar. Add a few more drops of food coloring to achieve the desired red shade. If the sugar is too dark, add 1 to 2 teaspoons of sugar, seal the bag and shake to lighten.
-
Open the bag and allow the sugar to dry before use. The darker the shade, the longer the sugar will take to dry. It may take up to 24 hours for the sugar to dry completely. Store colored sugar in the food storage bag or a container in a cool place with other baking supplies.
