Dutch Oven Cooking Over an Open Fire

Cooking over an open fire is a rewarding experience that will take some time to perfect. Managing the heat from the fire will be far more challenging than your stovetop. A camp-style Dutch oven is a must for this technique because the heavy metal will moderate the extreme temperatures. You can cook numerous delicious meals over an open fire if you choose the correct recipes suited for this style and have the right equipment.

Things You'll Need

  • Hand shovel
  • Rocks
  • Firewood
  • Matches or other firestarter
  • Steel tripod with hook
  • Camp Dutch oven

Instructions

  1. Build a fire pit away from flammable objects by digging an 18-inch-wide by 3-inch-deep hole and surrounding it with rocks.

  2. Fill the fire pit with seasoned firewood and start a large fire. Allow this fire to burn for a significant amount of time to develop a deep coal bed. It is best to cook directly over the coals, as this will provide a more consistent heat than a fire.

  3. Place the steel tripod over the coal bed and attach the camp-style Dutch oven to the hook. This type of oven will come with a handle that attaches to either side of the cooking vessel for this method.

  4. Place food in the Dutch oven and cook it to the desired temperature. You may need to vary the height of the Dutch oven over the coals to adjust the temperature and avoid burning the food.
