How to Flame Vodka (6 Steps)
Cooking with vodka has been a tradition in many kitchens for years. Adding a vodka flambé to a recipe can add an extra dimension of flavor that will make your tastebuds sing, and adding flame to a vodka shot can also add a new take on a traditional shot. Some people are afraid of the fire, but as long as you are safe and careful when preparing flaming vodka, there is nothing to worry about.
Things You'll Need
- Cooking pan with rounded, deep sides
- Vodka
- Barbecue lighter
- Measuring cup
- Shot glasses
Flambé
-
Prepare the recipe you intend to use for vodka flaming in your deep, rounded cooking pan. As it is cooking, prepare the recommended amount of vodka for the recipe in a measuring cup. Place vodka in the microwave for 10 to 15 seconds to ensure any chill has been taken off the alcohol, so it will more easily ignite.
-
Check the area around the stove to make sure anything flammable is moved out of the way. Pour the vodka into the hot pan over the food. Use the barbecue lighter to light the vodka fumes, and not the liquid itself, from the edge of the pan. Lean back as initially there will be a big flame. If the dish does not ignite, the vodka may still need to warm. In that case, wait 10 seconds and try again.
-
Shake the pan to allow more of the vodka fumes to escape the liquid. Turn the heat off the stove and allow the vodka flames to burn themselves out. Do not move the pan off the stove while the vodka is still burning. Move food to plates and serve.
Vodka Shots
-
Prepare your vodka drink/shot according to how you would normally prepare it. Make sure the vodka is not cold when you prepare the shot.
-
Move anything flammable out of the way. Light the vodka fumes with a barbecue lighter at the rim of the glass. Let the vodka burn for a few seconds.
-
Blow the flaming vodka out and drink the shot.
