How to Crush Peanuts
Peanuts are a flavorful and important ingredient in many dishes, particularly in Asian cuisine. For many recipes that call for peanuts, you'll need to crush them. Crushing peanuts with little mess or frustration is a cinch once you learn a few simple techniques. When you discover how easy it is to pulverize peanuts, you'll want to start adding them to more dishes.
Things You'll Need
- Baking or cookie sheet
- Oven
- Resealable plastic bag
- Rolling pin
- Sieve
- Mortar and pestle (optional)
Instructions
-
Shell the peanuts or buy shelled peanuts, to expedite your food preparation time.
-
Place the shelled peanuts on a baking or cookie sheet and put them in the oven at 250 degrees Fahrenheit for about 5 minutes to toast them lightly. Toasting will release flavor and make the peanuts easier to crush.
-
Put the toasted peanuts into a resealable plastic bag and close it tightly. Put the bag on a hard, flat surface.
-
Run the rolling pin back and forth over the peanuts until they break into pieces.
-
Crush any tough chunks with a mortar and pestle. You can even use a tack hammer if you have a durable surface -- that the hammer won't damage -- on which to work.
-
Pour the crushed nuts into a sieve to remove the dust and powder, leaving only perfectly crushed peanuts.
