How to Make Seasoned Flour for Dredging
Whether you are deep-frying or pan frying, coating meats and vegetables in flour adds another level of flavor to your meals, as long as you add the right seasonings. Flour, by itself, is bland. However, mixing flour with other ingredients can add both flavor and crunch to your next batch of fried chicken, fish, country-fried steak, eggplant Parmesan or whatever else you want to fry.
Things You'll Need
- All-purpose flour
- Cornstarch
- Seasonings
- Baking powder or baking soda, optional
- Whisk
- Container with lid
Instructions
-
Combine cornstarch and flour in a large bowl. You need a 2 to 1 ratio of flour to cornstarch. For example, you can use 2 cups of flour and 1 cup of corn starch.
-
Add whatever seasonings you want for your dish as certain seasonings and spices go well with certain dishes. Consider using spices and seasonings, such as salt, ground black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder and ground thyme. Add poultry seasoning and ground cayenne pepper, for example, if you are frying chicken. Include ground oregano and ground basil as the spices for chicken or eggplant Parmesan. Use 1 teaspoon of seasoning per cup of dredging mix.
-
Add a small amount of baking powder or baking soda to the mixture, which will help create a thicker coating. Use a whisk to mix all of the ingredients well.
-
Place the seasoned flour in a sealed container if you are making the seasoned flour mix ahead of time. Label and date the container so that you know what you have and when it was made.
