How to Cook an Egg in a Hole in the Oven

It’s known as an egg in the hole, but this rather perfunctory name belies the charm of seeing it on a plate: A piece of toast -- cut out in the middle, to create the hole -- with a cooked egg framed artfully in the middle. Like a greeting card tucked under a breakfast plate, it conveys in an instant that someone cares about the little gestures that can mean a great deal. When several people are deserving of this type of attention, make the dish in your oven -- and make a special day for them.

Things You'll Need

  • Baking sheet
  • Nonfat cooking spray
  • Bread
  • Cookie cutter
  • Butter
  • Egg
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Cheddar cheese and crumbled bacon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Coat a baking sheet with nonfat cooking spray.

  2. Cut a hole in the middle of a slice of bread. Use a round cookie cutter or a heart-shaped cutter for a sentimental touch. White bread is a natural choice, but the dish will be enhanced by cinnamon or raisin bread.

  3. Create a single or double-decker egg in the hole – the latter choice being ideal for people who have a keen taste for toast. For the former, butter the bread with a hole in the center and place it, buttered side down, onto the baking sheet. Or take a second slice of uncut bread, butter it and place it on the sheet. Then position the cut bread -- the one with the hole in it -- right on top, lining up the edges.

  4. Crack an egg right into the hole, whether you’re making a single- or double-decker egg in the hole. Sprinkle the egg with salt and pepper. Top the egg with a little cheddar cheese and crumbled bacon, if you like, for a nice finishing touch.

  5. Bake the egg for about 15 to 20 minutes or until it is set. Flip a single-layer egg in the hole about three-quarters of the way through the cooking time if you prefer it easy-over.
