How to Fry Shrimp Using Italian Bread Crumbs

Coating shrimp in Italian breadcrumbs before frying adds both crunch and the familiar flavor of herbs and spices common to Italian cooking. Italian breadcrumbs can be found in any grocery store, but you can also make them yourself using stale Italian bread and seasonings such as oregano, parsley, garlic and even Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese. The shrimp, which should be cleaned and peeled, need to be dredged in both flour and egg wash before going into the breadcrumbs so they'll adhere well. The breaded shrimp only needs a minute or so to cook and should be served hot a dipping sauce.

Things You'll Need

  • Large pot or deep-fryer
  • Vegetable oil
  • Flour
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Additional seasonings (optional)
  • Eggs
  • Bowls
  • Slotted spoon
  • Paper towels
  • Serving plate

Instructions

  1. Fill a large pot or deep-fryer with vegetable oil, about 3/4 of the way up. Bring to a temperature of about 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

  2. Fill a small bowl with flour and add salt, pepper and any additional seasonings you would like, such as garlic powder or dried herbs. Beat one or two eggs together in another bowl and pour the Italian breadcrumbs into a third bowl.

  3. Dredge cleaned and peeled shrimp first into the flour, then into the eggs and finally into the breadcrumbs. Turn the shrimp over a few times in the breadcrumbs, pressing lightly to make sure they adhere.

  4. Place the breaded shrimp into the hot oil carefully, cooking them in batches for about 1 to 2 minutes, just until they turn a golden brown. Use a slotted spoon to remove them from the oil and drain on a plate lined with paper towels. Serve hot.
