How to Use a Heating Core
A heating core allows to you bake large cakes evenly, with no burnt edges or gooey centers. Heating cores are small cylindrical devices you fill with batter and place in the center of the cake pan. The metal of the heating core helps heat the center of the cake more quickly, baking it at the same rate as the outside. Most bakers use heating cores for cakes larger than 12 inches in diameter. Look for a heating core at a cake decorating store, some crafts stores or online.
Things You'll Need
- Grease
- Flour
- Cake batter
- Cake pan
- Cake leveler
Instructions
-
Grease the inside and outside of the heating core, and dust it with flour.
-
Fill the heating core partway with batter. Aim to fill it to the same level as you will fill the rest of the pan, but keep in mind that you don't have to be precise; you can level the cake later if necessary.
-
Flour and grease a baking pan, and place the filled heating core in its center. Fill the rest of the pan with batter.
-
Bake the cake according to the recipe's instructions. Let it cool for five to 10minutes.
-
Remove the heating core from the cake, and let it cool separately. Once the heating core has cooled completely, remove its plug of cake and place it in the larger cake's hole.
-
Let the cake cool for at least an hour. Level the cake with a cake leveler or serrated knife.
