How to Put Cookie Crumbs on the Side of a Cake

Applying cookie crumbs to the sides of a cake is a colorful way of decorating the dessert. It also provides an added texture and another flavor to complement the cake's taste. This decorating method is similar to how bakers decorate red velvet or black forest cakes by sprinkling their sides with cake crumbs. You'll need to tilt the cake to apply the crumbs, so have someone assist you by holding the cake and rotating it as you decorate it.

Things You'll Need

  • Iced cake
  • Cake platter or cake board
  • 3 dozen cookies of your choice
  • Blender
  • Bowl

Prepare Cookie Crumbs

  1. Break 3 dozen cookies into very small pieces with your hands.

  2. Put the broken cookies into a blender.

  3. Run the blender on the "Chop" setting until the cookies are ground into small crumbs. If the crumbs stick together while the blender runs, shut off the blender and separate the crumbs with a spoon before you continue to chop them.

  4. Pour the cookie crumbs into a bowl.

Apply Crumbs to Cake

  1. Set the iced cake on a cake platter or cake board.

  2. Have your assistant hold the cake up by bracing the edge of the cake platter against a table and tilting the cake slightly forward.

  3. Scoop up a handful of cookie crumbs.

  4. Sprinkle the crumbs in an even layer on the side of the cake and gently press them with your other hand to make them stick into the frosting. Don't press hard; the crumbs should look like they are sitting on the icing, not be embedded in it.

  5. Rotate the cake to coat the next side.

  6. Repeat Steps 3, 4 and 5 until the sides are completely coated.
