How to Make a Ruffle Buttercream Border
Towering cakes are often the centerpiece for celebrations and special occasions. Buttercream icing is often used to cover cakes in their entirety, but can be used to make a variety of decorations as well. Butter, shortening, milk and confectioners sugar are combined to produce a frosting that is the ideal consistency for piping flowers and borders. Ruffle borders can be used to frame sheet cakes or divide the layers of tiered cakes.
Things You'll Need
- Buttercream icing
- Disposable decorating bag
- Standard coupler
- Tip #104
Instructions
-
Fit a #104 decorating tip to a disposable decorating bag using a standard coupler. The tip will slide down into the coupler and the coupler will screw directly on the decorating bag.
-
Fill the decorating bag with prepared buttercream icing.
-
Hold the decorating bag at a 45 degree angle with the bag pointing in the 3:00 direction. For left handed people the bag should be pointing toward the 9:00 position.
-
Move your wrist down while squeezing gently on the decorating bag. This will make one curl of the ruffle. Move your wrist up and down in a continuous motion while moving to the right to produce a ruffle. Move to the left instead of the right if you are left handed. As you move raise and lower the narrow end of the tip.
