How to Make a Dinosaur From Fondant (9 Steps)

Fondant shapes add a professional-looking touch to baked goods. Often used as a smooth covering for cakes, fondant also molds easily into shapes and characters because of it's dough-like consistency. A dinosaur-themed party presents the perfect venue for fondant shapes -- place them on top of your cake or the cupcakes you plan to serve.

Things You'll Need

  • Cornstarch
  • Fondant
  • Rolling pin
  • Cookie cutter
  • Spatula
  • Toothpicks
  • Paring knife

Flat Fondant Dinosaurs

  1. Dust your work area with cornstarch to prevent fondant from sticking when you are working with it.

  2. Place a ball of colored fondant on your work surface. Sprinkle cornstarch onto a rolling pin and roll the fondant out to a 1/8-inch thickness. Make sure that the fondant is evenly rolled out so that your shapes are of a consistent thickness.

  3. Dust a dinosaur-shaped cookie cutter with cornstarch and press it into the fondant. Lift the cookie cutter away from the fondant. Peel the fondant away from the dinosaur shape.

  4. Lift the fondant shape carefully with your spatula and place it onto your cake or cupcake.

Three-Dimensional Fondant Dinosaurs

  1. Dust your hands with fondant so that the substance will not stick to your hands. Roll a small piece of fondant into a ball. The size of the ball depends on your desired dinosaur size. Shape the ball into a Tyrannosaurus Rex head with your hands. The head should be roughly rectangle shaped, with the shorter sides being the front and back of the head.

  2. Create the mouth by cutting a wedge out of the front of the head with a paring knife. Fill the mouth with white fondant to create teeth. Score the white fondant with the tip of a toothpick so that it looks like jagged, bared teeth. Set the head aside.

  3. Form another, larger ball of fondant into the dinosaur's body and tail. The body should be a long, thick rectangle shape with a long tail extending from the back. Set the body shape to the side.

  4. Make small legs using two balls of fondant. Shape the balls so that they look like large teeth. They should be rounded at the top and flat on the bottom. Set them to the side. Make the dinosaur's tiny arms using very small balls of fondant and shaping them so that they look like baseball bats -- small on one end and thicker on the other.

  5. Snap toothpicks in half and use them to assemble the dinosaur pieces. Place toothpicks in the backs of the legs and attach them to the base of the body. Insert toothpicks into the tops of the arms and the sides of the body. Add the head to the top of the body. Place two chocolate frosting points on either side of the dinosaur head to create eyes.
