How to Decorate or Garnish a Cherry Pie

Few things say "all-American comfort food" like a cherry pie. Whether you're using fresh or canned cherries, the smell of the fresh-baked crust and the gooey center is a true dessert delight. Serve it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or take your pie to the next level by decorating or garnishing it in an eye-catching way.

Things You'll Need

  • Rolling pin
  • Pie crust
  • Pie plate
  • Knife
  • Cookie cutters
  • Ice cream
  • Powdered sugar
  • Mint sprigs
  • Chocolate shavings

Instructions

  1. Make a creative top crust by cutting your dough into shapes. Overlap strips to make a cross-hatched crust; place squares of dough to form a checkerboard pattern; or punch out designs using cookie cutters and place them atop your pie.

  2. Cut dough into long thin strips, rolling and braid them, then place the braid around the pie's edge. Or use small cookie cutters to punch out decorative shapes and lay them around your pie edges.

  3. Place a scoop of vanilla ice cream next to a slice of pie for a simply pleasing presentation. Or scoop out unexpected ice cream flavors, such as chocolate, butterscotch or coconut. A dollop of fresh whipped cream always works, and the white looks great against the red of the cherries.

  4. Sprinkle powdered sugar on top of your pie for a quick and easy -- yet dramatic -- look. To create a pattern out of the sugar, place a doily on top of the pie, then sprinkle the sugar on. Remove the doily when done.

  5. Place a sprig of mint next to a slice of pie for a clean and simple look. For a more classic combination, sprinkle chocolate shavings atop the pie and turn cherry pie into chocolate cherry pie.
