How to Decorate a Cupcake With Green Turf (6 Steps)

Green turf accentuates cupcakes with an outdoor theme, and the applications are many, whether you're providing snacks for your son's football team, making spring-themed cupcakes or creating a graveyard scene for Halloween cupcakes. The effect is easy to achieve if you have a grass decorating tip, a multi-opening tip with serrated edges around each hole. The frosting comes out resembling several strands of grass, and the serrated edges help give the frosting an imperfect, raggedy appearance that authenticates the look of turf.

Things You'll Need

  • Buttercream frosting
  • Food coloring
  • Decorating bag
  • Scissors
  • Grass decorating tip

Instructions

  1. Color your frosting with green food coloring, using your choice of liquid, gel or powder food coloring. You can use a solid color, if desired, or divide the frosting and make several shades of green.

  2. Cut the tip of a frosting decorating bag and insert a multi-opening grass tip. Fill the bag with the green frosting and squeeze out any air bubbles until the frosting comes out of the tip. If you use multiple shades of green, alternate adding the different shades to the bag so they'll come out with a multi-toned grass look.

  3. Hold the tip at the center of the cupcake, with the bag perpendicular to the top of the cupcake. The tip should be so close to the cupcake that it's almost touching the surface.

  4. Squeeze the bag with moderate pressure so the frosting comes out of the tip. Lift the tip slowly away from the cupcake until you reach the desired height for the grass, usually about 1/2 inch for a well-kept lawn. You can make longer sprigs of grass if you want it to look as though the lawn has been neglected.

  5. Stop squeezing the bag when you reach the desired height. This cuts off the flow of frosting and breaks off the grass strands. Pull the tip away from the cupcake when the frosting strand breaks. You can also pull the bag slightly to the side to give the look of flopped-over grass.

  6. Reposition the tip directly beside the first bit of piped grass. Squeeze frosting onto the cupcake, stopping at the same height as the previous bit of grass. Repeat this process until you completely cover the exposed cake top with frosting.
