How to Get a Metallic Finish With Fondant
Fondant-covered cake can shine with a metallic finish if you apply luster dust, an edible, shimmering dust that applied directly on top of the fondant. Try silver luster dust to give a robot cake a metallic look, or use gold luster dust to make realistic coins for a treasure-themed cake. Luster dust can be applied dry to create a subtle shimmer, but it looks like real metal when mixed with alcohol-based extract or clear alcohol such as vodka to create a thick paint. The alcohol evaporates quickly without softening the fondant, leaving behind a realistic metal finish.
Things You'll Need
- Glass mixing bowl
- Luster dust
- Vodka, gin or lemon extract
- Paintbrush
Instructions
-
Mix luster dust in your choice of finish, such as gold, silver, bronze or copper, with vodka or lemon extract in a small mixing bowl. A ratio of about 1/4 teaspoon of luster dust for every 1 to 2 drops of liquid works well, but you might add even more liquid if you want a very subtle application.
-
Stir the liquid and luster dust with an artist's paintbrush until the luster dust forms a liquid similar to paint.
-
Brush the luster dust paint onto fresh fondant -- don't wait until the fondant dries -- with an artist's paintbrush. Paint small details with a fine-tipped paintbrush or work with a larger brush to cover a whole cake. Brush the liquid on in an even layer. Allow the first coat to dry completely so you can inspect the amount of coverage.
-
Apply a second series of coats of the liquid luster dust if you want a bolder metallic effect. Repeat with additional thin coats until you achieve the desired level of coverage, allowing the liquid to evaporate between each coat. Mix additional batches in the mixing bowl, as needed. If you mixed a large batch of the "paint" initially, the liquid might evaporate before you apply it to the fondant, but you can add more alcohol or lemon extract to thin out the luster dust.
