Can Puff Pastry Appetizers Be Made in Advance?
With its light, flaky texture and buttery taste, puff pastry is a delight as a dessert filled with delicious custard or an appetizer filled with rich, cheesy flavors. Unlike yeast dough, puff pastry does not contain leaveners. Instead, it relies on the steam produced during baking to cause its layers to expand and "puff." Some puff pastry appetizers can be made and kept in the freezer for as long as three months.
Freeze for Three Months
-
Puff pastry appetizers that you can make and freeze for as long as three months include cheese straws and caramelized onion tartlets. According to the chefs at Jewel-Osco, the trick is to layer the appetizers in waxed paper and keep them in an airtight container. When you are ready to serve them, take the appetizers out of the container and bake on a parchment-lined baking pan for three to four minutes in a preheated 400-degree Fahrenheit oven.
Freeze for One Month
-
Make puff pastry sausage balls and pesto swirls and freeze them in airtight bags for as long as a month. When you are ready to serve them, transfer the appetizers to a baking pan and bake for 20 minutes in a preheated 400-degree F oven. Mini meatball pizza pies can also be made in advance, placed in airtight bags and frozen for as long as a month. When ready to serve, place them in a 375-degree F preheated oven for 20 minutes.
Refrigerate for Two Hours
-
Most puff pastry appetizer recipes can be assembled and kept in the refrigerator for a few hours. Just before serving, bake them according to the directions on the recipe. Prepare and bake plain puff pastry two hours in advance and keep it in an airtight container at room temperature. The chefs at Epicurious suggest that you just place them back in the oven briefly if the pastry gets too soggy. Then fill them with a favorite savory filling.
Frozen Puff Pastry
-
Freeze only the puff pastry for future use. Make the puff pastry sheets yourself or buy them premade and frozen at the grocery store. Because some pre-made sheets are baked with vegetable oil instead of butter, check the ingredients on the packaging before you buy as this might affect the texture and flavor of your appetizers. When you are ready to make the appetizers, thaw the puff pastry in the refrigerator overnight or at room temperature for 45 minutes.
