Can You Make a Pumpkin Roll With a Cake Mix? (4 Steps)

Cake rolls consist of a layer cake covered in filling that's rolled and then sliced to serve, making attractive pinwheel designs. The flavor combinations between cake and filling are nearly endless, but among the classic cake rolls, which are particularly popular during autumn, are pumpkin rolls. They are typically made with a basic yellow cake into which canned pumpkin and fall spices are mixed. The filling is usually made from cream cheese. When making a pumpkin roll, you can use a cake mix for the yellow cake, which will save you time and still produce a delicious dessert.

Things You'll Need

  • Canned pumpkin
  • Fall spices
  • 15-by-10-inch baking pan
  • Nonstick cooking spray
  • Tea towel
  • Powdered sugar
  • Ingredients for filling
  • Plastic wrap

Instructions

  1. Make your yellow cake batter according to the directions on the box. To make the cake pumpkin-flavored, add canned pumpkin and fall spices like cinnamon, clove and nutmeg, if desired. Coat a 15-by-10-inch baking pan -- also known as a jelly roll pan -- with nonstick cooking spray and pour in the batter. Bake according to the directions in a preheated oven until done, usually about 15 minutes.

  2. Place the cooked cake on a tea towel sprinkled generously with powdered sugar, which will keep the cake from sticking. Roll the cake in the towel while it is still hot and let cool for about 60 minutes.

  3. Make your filling according to your recipe. The most common filling for a pumpkin roll consists of a mix of cream cheese, powdered sugar and vanilla. Whipped cream can be used instead of cream cheese, but such cakes should be served within a few hours of making as the whipped cream won't hold up as well as the cream cheese.

  4. Unroll the cake and spread the filling evenly across its surface. Reroll the cake, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for about an hour before unwrapping, slicing and serving. You can top the cake with frosting, powdered sugar or crushed nuts.
