What Is a Good Snickerdoodle Frosting?

Snickerdoodle cookies are buttery and sugary, with a mild cinnamon flavor. Since they’re rolled in cinnamon and sugar before they’re baked, they have a crunchy exterior and soft, chewy interior. While the snickerdoodle is delicious served plain, adding a layer of frosting to your cookie can take it to the next level for your palate. There’s no wrong way to frost a snickerdoodle, but some frosting varieties might work better than others -- cream cheese, buttercream, a glaze and chocolate ganache are good starting points.

Go Cream Cheese

  • Cream cheese frosting is smooth and tangy and thick enough to stick to the surface of a snickerdoodle cookie. It’s made from a combination of cream cheese, butter or shortening, powdered sugar, milk and flavorings. A vanilla cream cheese frosting pairs nicely with snickerdoodles. For a more exotic topping, make a cinnamon-vanilla cream cheese or orange cream cheese frosting to ice your snickerdoodles.

Try Out Buttercream

  • Buttercream is rich, fluffy and sweet. It’s made using butter, milk, powdered sugar and flavorings. Use a medium-to-thick consistency buttercream -- it should stick to the back of a spatula and hold its peaks in the mixing bowl. A vanilla or chocolate buttercream pairs nicely with the snickerdoodle’s flavor. If you want something different, make an apple butter buttercream by mixing apple butter, butter powdered sugar and vanilla in a mixer until light and fluffy.

Glaze Them

  • If you want to add a simple, smooth sugary finish to your snickerdoodles, pour a glaze on top. Glazes consist of milk and powdered sugar, whisked together and poured over the surface of your cookie. Once it dries, you’ll have a thin sugar crust similar to the glaze on a donut. Make your glaze with milk or use a fruit juice to add extra flavor.

Ganache

  • Chocolate ganache is decadent and velvety smooth. It’s made using dark, milk or white chocolate and heavy cream. A plain chocolate ganache adds richness to the snickerdoodle and complements the crunchy, sugary exterior. You can also flavor your ganache using candy oils, powders or liqueurs to create flavors like white chocolate and orange, dark chocolate and orange or dark or milk chocolate with peppermint. Spread the ganache on top of the snickerdoodles immediately after you make it and wait for it to set before eating.
