What is a Bakewell tart?
Bakewell tart or Bakewell pudding is a traditional English tart from the town of Bakewell in Derbyshire.
Traditional Bakewell Tart:
Consists of:
- A shortcrust pastry shell
- A layer of raspberry jam or preserves
- An almond frangipane filling of almonds, sugar, butter, and eggs
After assembling these components, the final product is usually topped with flaked almonds and sugar crystals in a lattice design and can have an egg wash over the top too before baking in the oven.
Although traditionally round shape, Bakewell tarts can come in square and rectangular form as well. These tarts can now be found widely across the British Isles, where slight derivations can sometimes also be observed.
