How to Make Your Own Candy Mold
Looking for a candy mold but you can't find just want you want? I will teach you how to make your own mold from FDA approved silicone and polymer clay
Things You'll Need
- FDA approved silicone
- Aluminum Foil
- Lollipop sticks (optional)
- Something to make a mold from. I used Polymer Clay
Instructions
-
If you need a guide on how to make something in Polymer Clay to make a mold into, use the link at the bottom of this article, unde Resources.
-
The first thing you have to do is make sure your silicone is Food Grade. In other words, it is FDA approved to be in direct contact with food. I used Silicone Plastique in this guide.
-
Silicone Plastique comes in two parts. One part is white and the other is a aqua color.
-
Get equal parts of each color. I did mine by making the same size balls.
-
Mix the two colors together until you see only one color. The silicone will stay 'wet' for about 10 to 15 minutes.
-
Get the item you are making a mold from and take tiny bits of silicone and push it until the detailed area. For this guide, I am making a mold of a classic car I made from Polymer Clay.
-
Once you have the whole thing covered with the first coat to get the details, add silicone cover the whole thing. Try and get it at least 1/4" thick. Make sure to not get the silicone on the back. You need to be able to remove your item.
-
If you are making a lollipop, add a stick. You can place your mold upside down or right side down. Whichever you want. If you are making a lollipop right side up, put something to hold the stick up.
-
While the silicone is still wet, it is a good idea to mark it so you know what the item is. You can use a pin or a toothpick in an area out of the way.
-
Now you have to wait. The Silicone Plastique says it takes about an hour to dry. I prefer to wait overnight. This is because my molds are quite detailed and it was just easier for me.
-
Once your wait is over, take out your item and remove the stick. You will now have your very own custom made candy mold.
-
Before you use it, make sure you wash it and it is completely dry. Use a napkin to get the inside corners dry.
