How to Stop Bacon From Curling

Whether you are preparing breakfast or using it as in element in another dish, bacon's aroma and flavor leave most eaters wanting more. Cooking crisp, flat bacon is more of an art than a science. There are several methods for cooking your breakfast meat, but pan frying and baking your bacon in the oven are the two most reliable methods for ensuring perfectly cooked bacon.

Things You'll Need

  • Frying pan
  • Tongs
  • Baking sheet

Pan Fried

  1. Pull your bacon out of the refrigerator and set it on the counter to allow it to warm up. Room temperature bacon will be not be shocked as badly when put onto the hot pan.

  2. Place your frying pan on the burner and set it to a medium-low heat.

  3. Place the bacon down flat onto the surface of the frying pan.

  4. Allow the bacon to cook, checking its underside every few minutes to see how it is coming along. Your bacon will begin to sizzle. The underside is properly cooked once all the pieces have begun to brown.

  5. Flip the bacon -- only once -- to the other side using a pair of tongs and press down each piece so it lays flat. The other side of your bacon will be finished cooking when it browns and you start to see white bubbles forming around each piece.

  6. Take the bacon off the pan and set it onto a plate covered in paper towels. Use paper towels to pat-dry the bacon.

Baked Bacon

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 F.

  2. Lay out the bacon while you wait for your oven to heat up. Place each strip onto a baking sheet or tray. Each piece should lay flat and not touch the other pieces.

  3. Place the bacon into the oven and let it cook for about 10 to 15 minutes. You will want to keep an eye on your bacon because each batch will cook at a slightly different speed.

  4. Pull the bacon out of the oven and give it a couple minutes to rest before serving.
