How do you tell if eggs are fertile?

Candling:

This is a traditional method farmers use. It involves holding the eggs up to a bright light source, usually a flashlight, in a dark room. When candled, fertile eggs will have a visible embryo and blood vessels, while infertile eggs will appear clear.

Appearance:

Fertile eggs often have a thicker, more opaque shell and a distinct chalky appearance.

Float test:

Place the eggs in a bowl of water. Fertile eggs will sink to the bottom, while infertile eggs will float.

Listen:

If you shake the egg and hear a liquid sloshing sound, it is likely infertile. Fertile eggs usually have a denser consistency and do not produce as much liquid sound when shaken.
