How to Cook a Soft Boiled Egg in a Coffee Maker
You cook soft-boiled eggs a few minutes less than hard-boiled ones so the yolk remains runny while the whites are cooked through just like with a hard-boiled egg. Typically, you cook the eggs by boiling them in a pan of water on top of the stove, but you can use a coffee maker instead. A coffee maker heats up water before it drips into the carafe, while a small hot plate under the carafe keeps the water hot enough to cook the egg. Although not always practical, this cooking method might come in handy in a hotel or dorm room.
Things You'll Need
- Timer
- Bowl
Instructions
-
Bring the eggs up to room temperature so the shells don't crack when hot water hits them.
-
Fill the coffee carafe with enough water to completely cover the eggs. Pour the water into the water reservoir at the back of the coffee maker.
-
Place the eggs in the bottom of the coffee carafe and set it in place on the hot plate.
-
Turn on the coffee maker so the water heats up, filters through the filter basket and fills up the carafe above the eggs.
-
Leave the carafe on the hot plate for 3 to 5 minutes to cook the eggs after the water finishes filling the carafe. Cook medium eggs for 3 minutes, large eggs for 4 minutes and extra-large eggs for 5 minutes.
-
Lift the eggs out of the carafe with a spoon after cooking for the desired time. Place the hot eggs in a bowl. Run cold water over the eggs to cool them down and stop the cooking process. Without this step, the eggs keep cooking and the yolks can become solid.
