When you add yogurt to milk why does it get thicker?

Yogurt thickens milk because it contains bacteria that convert the lactose (milk sugar) into lactic acid. This process, known as acidification or fermentation, causes the milk proteins to coagulate and form a gel, resulting in a thicker, yogurt-like consistency.
