What does a grain free diet consist of?

A grain free diet excludes foods made from grains such as wheat, barley, oats, rye, corn, buckwheat, kamut, millet and rice. Many processed and packaged foods are manufactured with grains, and many people do not realize how often grains are used as fillers or thickeners.

Grains are a type of carbohydrates, and a grain free diet would generally consist of meats, fish, poultry, eggs, nuts and seeds, legumes and vegetables. Healthy fats such as olive oil and avocado are also part of a grain free diet.

Gluten-free labeled products are not necessarily grain free, and should be examined carefully to ensure they do not contain grains such as rice or corn starch.
