How do you make salt bread from Barbados?

Ingredients

* 1 cup warm water (110-115 degrees F)

* 1 tablespoon sugar

* 2 teaspoons salt

* 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

* 2 teaspoons active dry yeast

* 3 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

1. In a large bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, salt, and oil. Stir until the sugar and salt are dissolved.

2. Sprinkle the yeast over the water mixture and let stand for 5 minutes, until the yeast is foamy.

3. Add the flour to the bowl and stir until a dough forms.

4. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.

5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until the dough has doubled in size.

6. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

7. Punch down the dough and divide it in half.

8. Roll out each half of the dough into a 12-inch rope.

9. Braid the two ropes of dough together and place the braid on a greased baking sheet.

10. Cover the braid with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 30 minutes, or until the dough has doubled in size.

11. Bake the bread in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.

12. Let the bread cool completely before slicing and serving.
