Homemade Whole Wheat Tortillas
Homemade whole wheat tortillas are delicious and easy to make. Because of their whole wheat, they have a higher nutritional content than ordinary store-bought tortillas, and they are much less expensive to make.
Big Appetites
-
Cooks.com, a recipe website, provides an easy-to-follow recipe for whole wheat tortillas that is delicious but small--the recipe serves only four people. If you are cooking up a batch of tortillas for a big group or you just know there will be requests for seconds, follow this guide. It will give you 12 tortillas.
Ingredients
-
For whole wheat tortillas, you need:
3 cups whole wheat flour
3/4 cup cold water
3/4 tsp. baking powder
3/4 tsp. salt
4 1/2 tsp. oil (canola oil is best)
Ready, Set, Cook
-
Combine flour, baking powder and salt. Blend ingredients together. It's best to use a food processor, but you can use a blender on its "pulse" setting, a Magic Bullet or an electric mixer. In a pinch, use a wooden spoon and old-fashioned elbow grease, but thoroughly mix the ingredients together. Stop the processor (or stop mixing) and add oil and blend it in. Next, add water and beat the mixture into a dough until it can stand alone as a ball in the center of the bowl.
Knead It
-
Knead the dough for two minutes. Cooks.com recommends using the food processor for this stage, but kneading also can be done effectively by hand. The dough should be an easy-to-hold ball at this point. Remove it and cut it into 12 parts. Then roll each part into a small ball. Let the dough rest for 10 minutes.
Roll and bake
-
Cover a board in flour and, one by one, roll each sectioned piece of dough into a very thin circle shape on the board. Once all 12 tortillas are rolled, place them, one by one, on a lightly oiled griddle. When little bubbles appear on its surface, flip the tortilla and bake its other side. Remove the tortillas from the pan, fill them with your favorite taco, burrito or enchilada fillings and serve.
