List of Types of Muffins
Muffins come in a range of different forms. Sweet muffins, like blueberry muffins, are perhaps the most prevalent variety, popular as snacks or sweet breakfast items. English muffins are a form of quick bread that are eaten with butter, and cupcakes are much sweeter still, and served as miniature cakes.
Corn Muffin
-
Corn muffins are made from cornmeal. They are similar in taste and consistency to cornbread, but they tend to be sweeter, and as such, they are often eaten as a light snack. They are popular in the United States, and are often served as an accompaniment to soup and chili, as they are good at absorbing flavor. They are made by adding yellow cornmeal to regular baking flour.
Blueberry Muffin
-
Blueberry muffins are a kind of sweet muffin made using blueberries. The blueberries are added to the muffin dough while it is being mixed, meaning that the fruit runs right through the muffins. Blueberries are very sweet, but they also impart a sharp flavor, which works well with the soft, buttery muffin. Blueberries have a lot of beneficial health properties, including high levels of antioxidants; as such, blueberry muffins have become a way of making a sweet treat a little healthier.
English Muffin
-
English muffins are savory, and are traditionally eaten with butter as part of an afternoon tea, or with jam or jelly for breakfast. Unlike other muffins, which are baked in tins, English muffins are cooked on a griddle in the oven, which gives them their distinctive dark coloration. They are served split in two, as this exposes the soft bread inside. Common variations of English muffins include those made with cheese and those that have raisins.
Cupcakes
-
Cupcakes share certain attributes with muffins; they are the same size, look very similar and are made in a similar fashion. Technically, they are small cakes, and as such, scaled-down cake recipes are traditionally used for their manufacture. They are much sweeter than muffins, are usually served with frosting on top, and can be flavored in lots of different ways. They are called cupcakes because they are often baked in small tea or coffee cups.
