Who created the donut?

There are multiple claimants to the invention of the donut, including:

- Hanson Gregory: A ship captain from Rockport, Maine, who claimed to have invented the donut in 1847 when he was 16 years old. He supposedly punched a hole in the center of dough to prevent the dough from sticking to the skewer while frying it.

- Elizabeth Gregory: Hanson Gregory's mother, who is also credited with the donut invention. According to some accounts, Elizabeth Gregory was the one who actually created the donut, and Hanson Gregory simply popularized it.

- Adolph Levitt: A Jewish immigrant from Russia who owned a bakery in New York City. In 1916, Levitt patented a machine that could mass-produce donuts, which helped to popularize the donut even further.
