How is a yam vegetable classified?

Yams are classified as a starchy root vegetable.

Here's why:

* Root vegetable: Yams grow underground as a root, similar to potatoes, carrots, and beets.

* Starchy: Yams are high in complex carbohydrates, primarily starch, which provides energy.

Important Note: The term "yam" is often used incorrectly in North America. What we typically call "yams" in the US and Canada are actually sweet potatoes, which belong to a different botanical family (Convolvulaceae) and have a sweeter taste.

True yams (genus *Dioscorea*) are less common in North America and have a drier, more starchy texture.
