Can you eat the stems of ornamental rhubarb?

Ornamental rhubarb, also known as Rheum palmatum, is a plant grown primarily for its attractive foliage. While it is related to edible rhubarb, ornamental rhubarb is not typically consumed as food due to its high levels of oxalic acid. Oxalic acid can be toxic if consumed in large quantities and can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Additionally, ornamental rhubarb leaves contain a higher concentration of oxalic acid compared to edible rhubarb. Therefore, it is not recommended to eat the stems of ornamental rhubarb and they should be considered poisonous.
