How to Eat Fruit Seeds (5 Steps)

Don't throw away those fruit seeds; eating the seeds along with the fruit offers you protection from certain diseases, including cancer. Fruit seeds are made up of various beneficial compounds, such as polyphenols, a type of antioxidant. The cancer-fighting agent nitriloside is found in apricot, cherry, peach, pear and plum seeds. Apple seeds contain trace amounts of cyanide, another cancer-fighting agent. The seeds in dark red and purple grapes contain resveratrol, an antioxidant. You can easily incorporate fruit seeds into your daily diet with some simple recipes.

Things You'll Need

  • Grape seed oil
  • Papaya seeds
  • Apricot seeds
  • Apple seeds
  • Pomegranate seeds
  • Blender
  • Food processor
  • Coffee grinder

Instructions

  1. Grind fruit seeds in an electric coffee grinder or food processor to make a fine powder. You can sprinkle the powder over salads, soups, yogurts, cold cereals or granola.

  2. Prepare a dressing for fish, meat and other entrees out of fruit seeds. Combine one-half onion and one tablespoon of fresh papaya seeds in a food processor or blender until the ingredients are a fine consistency. Add one-quarter cup of raspberry vinegar, one-quarter cup of sugar, one teaspoon of mustard and one-quarter teaspoon of salt. While the blender is running, slowly dribble in one-half cup of vegetable oil until the dressing emulsifies. Serve warm or chilled.

  3. Make a healthy desert with fruit seeds. Combine 1¼ cups of almonds, two teaspoons of apricot seeds and 2¼ cups of brown sugar in a blender until very fine. Add the whites from three eggs, and blend until smooth. Press into molds or form into rolls, and allow to chill in your refrigerator for several hours.

  4. Add fruit seeds to salads in their whole form. Heat one teaspoon of ground cumin in a frying pan, and stir until fragrant. Put the cumin in a large mixing bowl, and add one-third cup of lime juice, one tablespoon of sugar, one teaspoon of chopped cilantro and one-quarter teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Mix in one cup of pomegranate seeds, two cans of garbanzo beans, one cup of peeled and diced cucumber and one-half cup of chopped onion. Add one pinch of salt and serve.

  5. Include grape seed oil in your recipes. Put one cup of carrot juice and one teaspoon of chopped ginger into a pot, and bring to a boil over low heat. Pour into a blender, along with one tablespoon of rice wine vinegar and two tablespoons of grape seed oil, and blend the ingredients well. Use as a sauce over fish, meat, salads and vegetable dishes.
