How to Make Oat Bran Sesame Sticks (12 Steps)
Crunchy and nutty snack sticks are made healthier with the addition of oat bran. Prepare a large batch of these tiny bread sticks and store the leftovers in a tightly sealed container. They will last for up to two days. Serve the sesame sticks with soups or salads instead of larger bread sticks, or add them to snack mixes for serving at a party.
Things You'll Need
- 1 tbsp. honey
- 2 1/4 tsp. (1 packet) active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm milk (115 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit)
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 1/2 cups oat bran
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- Towel
- Rolling pin
- Pizza cutter or knife
- Baking sheet
- Cooking spray or vegetable oil
- 1 egg white, lightly beaten
- Pastry brush
- 2 tbsp. sesame seeds
Instructions
-
Combine the honey, yeast, warm milk in a bowl. Let it sit for 10 minutes or until bubbly.
-
Mix in a separate bowl the salt, oat bran and flour.
-
Stir the yeast mixture into the flour mixture until a dough ball forms.
-
Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for six to eight minutes or until the dough ball becomes smooth and bounces back when you press the center with your finger.
-
Cover the dough ball with a towel and let it rest and rise for one hour or until doubled in bulk.
-
Remove the towel. Press the center of the dough down to remove excess air.
-
Roll the dough into a 16 inch by 5 inch rectangle. Cover and let rest for 10 minutes.
-
Preheat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease the baking sheet with cooking spray or vegetable oil.
-
Cut the dough lengthwise with a pizza cutter every 1/2 inch to create 32 sticks measuring 16 inches long and 1/2 inch wide.
-
Transfer the bread sticks to the baking sheet.
-
Brush, with the pastry brush, the tops of the sticks with the lightly beaten egg white and sprinkle the sesame seeds over the sticks.
-
Bake the sesame sticks for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Allow the sticks to cool to room temperature before eating.
