How did the native Americans make cornbread?

Native Americans did not make cornbread as we know it today. They did, however, use cornmeal to make a variety of dishes, including a type of flatbread called pone. Pone was a simple cornmeal bread made with stone-ground cornmeal, and water, and sometimes salt. The cornmeal was mixed with water to form a dough, which was then patted out into a flat circle and cooked over an open fire. Corn pone was often eaten with other foods, such as stews or vegetables.

True cornbread was not developed until Europeans introduced wheat flour and baking powder to the Americas.
