What is koeksaad?
Koeksaad (from the Javanese _kwek sa-ad_, "as fragrant as fragrant herbs"), is a traditional Indonesian fruit soup or salad. It is composed of various tropical fruits served in a cold syrup broth, and garnished with shaved ice, syrup and jelly chunks. The soup is typically served during ceremonial or festive occasions like Lebaran.
The main ingredients for koeksaad are various fruits, such as:
* Papaya
* Pineapple
* Mango
* Banana
* Guava
* Grapes
The fruits are usually cut into small pieces, then mixed together in a large bowl.
In addition to the fruit, koeksaad also contains syrup, jelly chunks and shaved ice.
The syrup is made from sugar and water, and is often flavored with spices like cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. The jelly chunks are made from agar-agar, a type of seaweed.
Koeksaad is typically served cold, and is a refreshing and healthy dessert. It can also be enjoyed as a snack, or as a light meal.
