The Fuji apple (富士りんご) was developed at the Tohoku Research Station in Morioka, Iwate, Japan, in 1939 by crossing two American apple varieties, 'Red Delicious' and 'Virginia Beauty'. The cultivar was named 'Fuji' in 1962 after the tallest mountain in Japan, Mount Fuji.
